When you’re shopping for compost, you must look at the three numbers on the bag, for example 20-4-6.

The first number in a compost formula is the nitrogen content…..Nitrogen is used by plants for producing leaf growth and greener, lusher leaves.

The second number in a compost formula is the phosphorus content…..Phosphorus is used by plant to increase fruit development and to produce a strong root system.

The third number in a compost formula is the potassium (potash) content…..Potassium is used by plants for flower color and size. It is also vital to the strength of the plant. Chances are, your compost mixture is too high in Nitrogen. One year, I place honest nitrogen on my tomato plants and the plants got huge, but didn’t bear any tomatoes.

Direct sunlight is also really vital for garden plants. Your plants must get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day to produce excellent vegetables.

Sounds like you have two major problems already solved with two to go. Sunlight and fill up are the other two. If the plants are only being paid 3-4 hours sunlight or even taller plantings blocking sunlight will hinder growth. Fill up is essential but too much is going to wash away nutrients and drown plants.

Consistency is going to be key to growing excellent veggies.

How about trying some untreated fertilizers? I find they do a
better job than the compound compounds. I prepare my
garden area in the spring with a mix of steer and chicken
manure, then during the growing season, I use a mix of
fish emulsion diluted in fill up- my plants like it. I have had
a fantastic deal of accomplishment with the untreated fertilizers, and tons
    of vegetables.

Don’t worry too much about the fertilizers. Place your effort into improving the soil. I seldom use fertilizers and I have had some wonderful veggies and flowers!
