Nice video on composting. I am showing this to the kids as we are plotting a compost bin, or maybe just a pile for next year to use in the garden and flower beds I’m growing.

and you dont need a plastic barrel with holes in it. we make 20,000 cubic yards every six months piled on the ground in wind rows.

it doesn’t matter. Even dry it will ultimately compost. Just makes it take longer thats all. Everything composts… ultimately… allways.
Really, you don’t want the compost to be in full sun because it will dry out. You need to maintain the moisture level of a wrung-out sponge. The microorganisms need proper aeration, fill up, and variation of carbon and nitrogen rich materials in order to make compost.

No. The best composter is the ground in the corner of your yard or out in the open. A compost pile in full sun composts nearer than a pile in the shade. But either way, it will all compost.

No garden is complete without a compost pile! Compost is a soil conditioner, mulch and compost all wrapped into one. It feeds the soil microorganisms that help plants stay healthy, adds nutrients to the soil, and helps clay soil drain better and grimy soil save fill up
I have composted every way. The best compost is made in a pile on the open ground.
Shredding the wast will accelerate the process.
Peeing , yes urinating on the heap will act like a catalyst.
Keep the contents turned over weekly if poss.

Question neighbours to give their cut grass veg peeling as well.
That was very informitive and fantastic info. I didn’t know you could go to the garbage garage and question them about composters. Around here, if anyone has a composter, they are mostly domestic ones. I did notice that most of them have ventilation, but I didn’t know that it aided in having better composting and helped to reduce the smell. I didn’t know either that you must layer the wet compost, dry compost, etc. Thankfulness for posting. It was fantastic. :+)

Amusing what you were adage about local government being paid everyone to buy these . They did the same thing here in England . I’m not sure they are necesary though , four stakes and a length of chicken wire wrapped round it will do and it costs less.
lawn clippings are also a excellent insulator like straw and can be used to protect from frost in ahead of schedule spring and late fall.

We have a composter now and plot to initiation using it this spring. I have never seen one in use, other than surveillance videos online so we are excited to be starting our own.

Yes a compost pile must be a balanced mix of dry and wet material – when I cut my lawn I place the clippings in a sunny spot in my garden and let the grass dry out before putting it in my composter. This is my basic dry material, then I place in the wet kitchen scraps. Three weeks shortly I have compost!
